The real name of Australian Camp is actually “Thulo Kharka” meaning big pasture. It used to be seasonal herding place of buffalo and cow herders from the villages bellow Dhampus and other. It was unknown or less walked by trekkers till early 90s while Phedi – Dhampus - Pothana – Deurali – Landruk – Chhomrong route for Annapurna Sanctuary Trek aka Annapurna Base Camp was already popular, the route is just 15 minutes away to west of it. It is said that during late 80s, people from Austria found it so beautiful and they used to come and camp there for several days as it is so peaceful and pristine offering mesmerizing Mountain View. Since then people started to call it Austrian camp and as it is difficult to pronounce for local Nepalese people and then pronounced it Australian camp this is how the place got new name as Australian Camp.
There are several lodges at Australian Camp, they facilitate for eating and sleeping, most of guest houses offer en-suite rooms and WiFi is available, the good mobile reception. Angel Guest House is the best. Sometimes the place is crowded; mostly during the weekends as many Nepalese now they hike on Saturdays and Sunday.

We had an excellent time. We only had a short time to try some trekking and this walk was just one night away and a few hours walk each day which suited us perfectly. We had great views of the mountains for both sunrise and sunset. Accomodation was basic but clean and had own (western style) toilet. Pradip was an excellent guide - fun, relaxed and knowledgeable. The walk down through small villages and farmlets along 1000 year old paths was special in itself. Highly recommend. Easy to book and excellent information and responsive communication provided beforehand.
Over many years , Pradip has been invaluable in helping me to plan a long series of "off the beaten track" treks in Nepal and has shown enormous patience with my endless questions - some of which pushed the limits of even Pradip's extensive trekking knowledge. Always ready to help with a smile.
A huge thank you to Pradip Tamang for organising our recentNepal Advenure Tour and being our personal tour guide. Both my son (Callum) and I had a fantastic time experiencing the different activities Nepal has to offer, from the river rafting, the jungle safari, the trekking and not forgetting the bumpy flight from Pokhara, whilst appreciating its history and culture too. We could not fault any part of it and would recommend it to anyone wishing something different. Thanks once again Pradip, hope to see you again soon for more adventures.
